Herne Hill, a once little heard of location, is an increasingly popular area for would-be tenants and buyers alike. Located between the quaint Dulwich Village and the lively Brixton, Herne Hill is part of both the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark. Popular with first-time buyers and families, it boasts one of the nicest green areas in London – Brockwell Park, a strong sense of community and a friendly ambiance.
Heavily bombed during the Second World War, many Victorian and Edwardian houses were repaired and renovated. On empty bombsites new houses and apartment blocks were built. Many of the surviving Victorian and Edwardian houses have been transformed into spacious flats, although in tact houses can still be found, including substantial double-fronted detached properties in and around Burbage Road and a variety of semi-detached and terraced houses in the beautiful ‘Poet’s Corner’ area. Consequently there is a wide range of architectural styles and property types in Herne Hill to suit all tastes.
For sports enthusiasts and outdoor types, in addition to the beautiful Brockwell Park, Herne Hill is also home to the Brockwell Lido (an open air swimming pool) and the Herne Hill Velodrome that remains the only cycle racing track in London.
When it comes to shopping, there are mainly local independent stores and boutiques that add to the charm of the area. On a Sunday, the Herne Hill Market offers local produce and hand made craft items. For the weekly shop, Sainsbury’s can be found on the corner of Herne Hill and Half Moon Lane.
Good pubs and restaurants are easy to come by in Herne Hill. Family friendly locations such as The Florence can be found and The Half Moon is a popular Victorian pub that features two different bars and a separate area for live music; they also serve traditional Sunday roasts. A wide range of entertainment is also waiting to be discovered ranging from live Jazz to comedy nights at The Rosendale.
Herne Hill is well served by the London bus routes: 3, 37 (24 hours), 68, 196, 201, 322, 468, school route 690 and night buses N3 and N68. The 37 will get you to Brixton in just 5 minutes or to Clapham Common in 15 minutes.
Although there is no underground station, Herne Hill has its own train station and direct rail services run to London Blackfriars, Farringdon, St. Pancras International, Luton Airport and London Victoria. In addition, the nearby North Dulwich and Tulse Hill train stations offer further destinations making Herne Hill suitable for commuters.
