Living in Balham

Balham has been settled since the Saxon times and was home to a number of substantial country retreats for the affluent classes in the Eighteenth century. Following the opening of Balham Train Station in 1856 the area became more densely populated, and in recent years the district has seen a marked gentrification, with property prices rising as middle class professionals have moved in.

Balham is currently home to writer and comedian Arthur Smith and the SW12 postcode was the birthplace of chef Ainsley Harriot and football pundit Jimmy Hill!

Local Amenities in Balham

Balham is home to The Bedford, a pub venue for live music and comedy situated on Bedford Hill; performers at the 'Banana Cabaret' have included Eddie Izzard and Al Murray. In 1876, the building, then named "The Bedford Hotel", housed the Coroner’s inquest into the notorious unsolved murder of Charles Bravo.

Transport in Balham

Balham and Tooting falls largely within the London Borough of Wandsworth, with only a few streets coming under the Lambeth catchment. The A24 runs from South-West to North-East directly through Balham and Tooting and this main road is home to three Northern Line underground stations, Tooting Broadway, Tooting Bec and Balham.

Property in Balham

Arguably Balham’s most famous landmark, Du Cane Court, is the largest block of apartments in Europe built for private occupation rather than as social housing.
